I've always been in storytelling. I started out as a photographer, went into journalism, and eventually found my home in Narrative Therapy. So how did I then get into Sex and Relationship Therapy?
After years of stress, burnout and over-focusing on achievements, I realised that what mattered most in life was relationships. The more I saw clients, the more I saw how strongly the quality of our relationships shape the quality of our lives, and it always starts with the relationship we have with ourselves. If we’re not truly connecting with ourselves, our friends, family (chosen and biological), partners, peers and community, then it’s highly likely we’re not happy and fulfilled in our lives (feel free to challenge me if you believe otherwise).
I help people connect more deeply with themselves so they can connect more authentically with others. What does that look like exactly? Often it’s improving self talk. It could be learning to let go of old scripts that tell us who we “should” be. We start getting more honest with ourselves about what we really want in life, mustering the courage to go after it and take risks where it counts. Our relationship with ourselves is never helped by just one magical thing but multiple. And “the work” is always ever-evolving.
My personal experiences also undoubtedly shape my work. Being queer, autistic, having ADHD, living with chronic illnesses and having faced my own challenges with mental health and body image, I’m not immune to the throes of being human.
I’d worked in corporate communications, magazine journalism and the health & fitness industry before I finally landed in a profession I love. After spending my early 20s “hustling”, often working 2+ jobs at once, studying full-time, interning, volunteering, moving countries and cities multiple times, starting a variety of side businesses, competing in body building and basically “doing it all”, I burnt out (shock horror).
The writing was on the wall. In the midst of it all, I couldn’t see it. I was on a productivity bender, obsessed with constantly achieving, striving for more and being busy. One day I woke up and I couldn’t move my body. It felt as though I was shackled down by bricks. I’d developed chronic fatigue and it forever changed my life. While my health has never been the same since, it steered me in the direction of leading a more authentic, intentional life.
When I’m not with clients, I’m at the beach, at a cafe writing, collaborating with peers, running workshops, coaching people in lived-experience storytelling, producing a podcast, public speaking, creating educational content for my Instagram or getting 10k steps to counter balance my ludicrously sedentary lifestyle.
